I like Alexa, I use it so often to better understand the web, user behaviour in different countries but I so often asked myself couldnt we get some absolute numbers regarding unique users.
In such a competitive world it is an absurd that the everybody just use the same tool to measure websites. I very often found myself explaining to others that those numbers we see in Alexa are somewhat unreliable. The reason was very simple. When you ask yourself - what does Alexa measure , the answer is : "Alexa measures what Alexa measure", it is all about their toolbar distribution.
Therefore when I saw Compete the first time - I was thrilled. Then came Quantqast...
When there is a competion we will all benefit from it.
Those new sites have still long way in their coverage especially when it come to non US websites. The peception that there is no world out of the US is completely wrong and might be a benchmark for those new sites success/fail. Still, getting real numbers instead or relative ones is a huge progress.

Thanks for finding Compete.com. We are very aware that the internet far exceeds the U.S. market, but we have focused on quality over quantity. To accurately normalize the world is extremely difficult, but something Compete is working on. We have concentrating on creating the best metric for one market and will address world markets when we have the appropriate data. International metrics are only as good as the data that support them - so user beware.
Hi Oren --
Quantcast offers Global Visitor numbers for people who join the Quantified publisher program -- this is in addition to the domestic numbers.
I am delighted that people are enjoying the additional services out there!
Best,
Mark
